Rent the Runway Review

This past weekend, I was fortunate enough to be invited to Springfield Black Tie, which is a gala benefitting local LGBTQ charities. As its name implies, it is a black tie event, so I wanted to pull out all the stops and wear something really dramatic. I turned to Rent the Runway.
Rent the Runway is a service that provides clothing rental for women, particularly formalwear. They have brick and mortar stores in a few major cities, but offer their services online for the rest of us. You visit the website, apply your filters, and browse the inventory. If the dress you want is available on the date of your event, they will send it to your door a day or two before, and you send it back in their prepaid package when you’re done with it. You get a free backup size of your dress, and you can add a second style for $32.50.
The price of the items varies greatly, but for Springfield Black Tie, I chose a floor length sequin Badgley Mischka gown for $80. I added a sparkly necklace for $10 more. The dress arrived in a nice garment bag early Friday morning. My event was Saturday evening, so I had enough time to make sure it worked. It was a bit long on me, so I did have to run out and get some taller shoes! Other than that, it fit perfectly, and I felt like an old Hollywood starlet in all those sequins!
I had a wonderful time at the event and got compliments on my dress all night. The next day, I placed it back in the garment bag and dropped it off at UPS. Rent the Runway takes care of dry cleaning, so I didn’t have to do anything extra. Oh, and in case you were wondering, you can buy insurance in case you spill red wine on your dress, or someone steps on it and tears it. Insurance is only $5, which was worth it for my peace of mind.
The dress, necklace, insurance, dry cleaning, and shipping came in just under $100, but I felt like a million bucks all night. Rent the Runway’s customer service is fantastic, and I will definitely use them again. Besides formal gowns, they also have a wide variety of clothes for other occasions: weddings, holiday parties, New Years Eve, bachelorette parties, work wear, vacation essentials… the list goes on.
