7 Small Actions to Boost Your Confidence
Taking small risks can have a big impact. I tend to fall into a comfortable routine as the weather gets colder, and that routine can easily turn into a funk. I don’t feel creative, attractive, or social. I feel like I’m just getting through each day rather than living my best life. Sometimes it just takes one small action to embolden you to get back on track. A tiny boost in confidence can have a domino effect on your life. Here are a few things I do when I need a little kick start:
1. Wear lipstick.
Lipstick is definitely having a moment. I’m still stuck in the nude lip trend from a couple of years ago, but recently I discovered Urban Decay Vice lipsticks and I’m having so much fun experimenting with color! It only takes a second to brighten up my look, which brightens up my day.
2. Talk to a stranger.
As an introvert, this feels like a big risk. I think I’d be more comfortable jumping out of a plane than striking up a conversation with someone I don't know. But this is one of those small risks that can have a huge reward. What if that stranger becomes a good friend? I know I miss out on a lot by keeping to myself, so this is definitely one that I’m determined to work on.
3. Dine alone.
I used to feel so self conscious eating alone. It’s taken me a long time to realize that no one is paying attention to what I’m doing. Nobody is sitting in the corner whispering, “Look at that lady by herself. What a loser.” And even if they are, who cares? Dining alone, or seeing a movie alone, or checking out a fitness class by yourself can be very empowering. Enjoying one’s own company is a wonderful gift.
4. Change your hair.
After having the same hairstyle for 12 years I recently chopped off my long locks and got a trendy “lob.” I’m still getting used to it but just the fact that I was courageous enough to try something new has boosted my confidence. There’s a quote from Coco Chanel that says, “A woman who changes her hair is about to change her life.” Bring it.
5. Share your creativity.
Start a blog. Sell your handmade jewelry on Etsy. Make up your own bedtime story to read to your children. Get an adult coloring book and color a picture to hang on your fridge. You don’t have to be a talented artist, but sharing your creative gifts makes you feel good by brightening someone’s day.
I’m not talking about going out and buying all new furniture; just work with what you’ve got. Add a different throw pillow to your couch. Burn a holiday scented candle. If you’re feeling really bold, give your bedroom a fresh coat of paint. Small changes to your environment can bring inspiration to your everyday life.
7. Say yes to plans.
I’m the kind of person who is perfectly content to stay home every night. There’s nothing wrong with being a homebody, but it’s important to get out of the house and experience life outside your bubble. Especially as a stay at home mom. Even if I don’t feel like leaving the house, it always makes me feel like a “real person” again when I do.
